The Machine Intelligence Research Institute exists to ensure that smarter-than-human artificially intelligent systems have a positive impact. Because we expect advanced AI systems to be extraordinarily consequential in the long term, we believe it is imperative to work toward a theory of extraordinarily reliable and robust AI agent designs.

Since its founding in 2000, the Machine Intelligence Research Institute has had 4,157 distinct donors. Our largest contributors, each of whom has given at least $500,000, are:
